Get the Facts About Glaucoma | Qualicare

As you age, there are a number of conditions that you become more at risk for—one of which is glaucoma. In fact, according to the American Optometric Association, people who are over the age of 60 are more at risk for glaucoma than any other age group. And the risk of glaucoma only increases with age.

Our in-home care providers at Qualicare want to offer you tips on how you can recognize the signs of glaucoma, as well as treatment options that are available should you be diagnosed.

Glaucoma Basics

Glaucoma is a disease that damages your eye’s optic nerve that happens when high pressure in the eye causes fluid to build up in the front of the eye.

Normally, the fluid, called aqueous humor, flows out of your eye through a mesh-like channel. If this channel gets blocked, the liquid builds up.

Symptoms of glaucoma include:

  • Intraocular pressure
  • Blurred vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Severe eye pain
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Glaucoma is a very serious eye condition, which is why it is important to have regular comprehensive eye examinations and to recognize and react to any symptoms you experience.

While there is no way to cure glaucoma, once the condition is diagnosed, you can take steps to mitigate the damage the condition can cause and protect your vision.

The following are ways to treat glaucoma:

  • Eye drops
  • Pills
  • Laser procedures
  • Surgery

Remember, while it is good to seek medical attention when eye problems arise, it is also good to have your eyes checked on a regular basis for prevention of vision problems in the future. If it has been a while since your last eye exam, consider making an appointment sooner rather than later.
